Switzerlands Neutrality

Switzerland's Neutrality

“I fear that a fair neutrality will prove to be a bitter pill for our friends, ‘though necessary to keep us from the calamities of war.”- Thomas Jefferson

The term "neutral" is derived from the Latin:  "ne uter", meaning niether one nor the other. Switzerland has a long and proud tradition of maintaining a permanent state of armed neutrality. The scope of this neutrality has been tested as warfare has changed over time but throughout two World Wars and the continuing War on Terror, Switzerland has bravely maintained it's neutral state. Neutrality is embedded deep within the history and culture of Switzerland and Swiss citizens see neutrality as the backbone of Switzerland. That being said, Switzerland has long been under the scrutiny of critics who claim that a state of neutrality is a state of cowardliness. This website explains the history of Switzerland's neutrality, examines their neutrality during both world wars, as well as  the unique foreign affairs of this neutral state.
